Traveling by road with your little one can be grueling and quite exhausting. Unlike grownups, babies get easily irritated by the unfamiliar, prolonged car motion. Most times you will be tired by the time you arrive at your destination. By taking some simple measures, you can turn the tedious routine you normally go through every time you travel with your baby into a wonderful experience. It is easy to transform your holiday travel experience into a fun one- even for the baby. You need to pack the babys bag with enough essentials for the day. These include food, healthy snacks and drinks, nappies and baby wipes, and of course babys favorite toys and music. The idea should be to make your baby as comfortable as possible. Ensure that your baby gets enough sleep on the eve of your journey. This will relax him or her and ensure s/he is fresh in the morning.
Babies do not like being on their own, at all. The trip will be more bearable if there are two or more of you in the car. The other person can play with the baby and generally entertain him/her. If you are all alone, the baby is more likely to keep crying and throwing tantrums. You can be forearmed by fixing toys on the seat so that they do not fall every now and then. Be keen to change the toys after a short time because playing with one toy for long will no doubt make your baby get bored. When picking audio CDs to listen to on the road, include your babys favorite tunes, s/he will enjoy listening to them. You can also alternate the radio with your own singing. You will be amazed at how attentive she can be, listening to your voice and trying to mimic you.
Do not feed your baby on junk even when traveling. Mix different healthy snacks and soft foods and avoid foods that are hard to chew, salty or high in sugar content. Have a mixture of mashed foods and purees, sandwiches and squeezed fruits. If the baby is old enough to eat whole fruits, carry some along. Pack some instant baby cereal which you can convert into a meal anytime. If your bottle-feed him/her, carry a lot of sterilized water and include a flask of warm water for heating up his food/drinks.
It is necessary to make frequent stops every 2 hours, unless the baby falls asleep. You can get the baby out of the car for fresh air. Use these stops to check on and change his nappy. You can also use disposables. They are more convenient when on the road although cloth nappies work just as well. Clean up the babys bottom with clean wet wipes before changing him/her. Be sure to store the wipes separately from the disposables for hygienic purposes.
These steps will change your travel experience with your baby and you will soon look forward for the holiday break for more trips.
