Travel Maps: Why Online Maps Are Handy

Some people may ask, “Why should I use a map?” There are other ways of finding out how to get to where I am going such as using directions given by someone else.

Maps are handy to have available even if directions are available. The reason for this is that often time’s directions include phrases such as “turn at the big blue building.” If that building has been torn down, or if the person following the directions took a wrong turn somewhere else along the way, they will not be able to find the “big blue building” and will be completely lost. With a map, it is possible to find out where you are, and how to get back on course to find your destination.

One reason is because of the amount of time people spend on the internet on a daily basis, they are already online so finding a map does not take up too much extra time. It is very easy to quickly get a map while working online. These maps are also very convenient because a person does not have to take the time to go to the more traditional places of obtaining such as at a travel agency, travel and tourism office or even a store. These maps can also be a cost saver since a person does not generally have to pay for them or the other services the online provider offers. This makes traveling last minute much easier for people, which happens quite often.

Maps are also helpful in deciding the best course to take. What travel plan may be good for one person may not be the best option for another; therefore, each person should have the opportunity to chart their own travel course by the use of maps.

Some maps are very detailed and may take a person awhile to really understand everything that is on the map, which is why studying the map prior to traveling is a good idea. That way, sites rest stops or other places of interest will not be missed.

Maps are also helpful in determining how long it takes to get from one point to the next as mileage can easily be calculated. Along with finding out how long a trip will take, maps are also useful for finding the best route based on the travelers particular needs and desires while traveling. Some may want the quickest way possible; others may prefer the more scenic route.

However, just like all things, they are not perfect. The savvy traveler will take the time to compare online maps with traditional maps. Comparing the two types of maps will help the traveler find out which one is best for him or her based on the particular needs of the individual. Online maps will provide details that other maps may not. However, the same is true for traditional maps, which will show things that the online map will not.

Traveling, whether for business or pleasure is something that takes time to plan, even if it is a last minute trip. The use of online maps certainly makes the task of preparing for trips a little less time consuming, making more time for other preparations needed for travel, making the whole experience a little more enjoyable.

Travel – The Best Way to Explore the World!

Traveling, whether on a long or short trip, always needs careful planning. Before going on a trip, each and every aspect of the travel has to be well thought and well planned. Many of the trips have been cancelled or cut short mainly because of shoddy or incomplete planning. Travelling as such is a major pleasure activity but any shortcoming in this will leave bad memories and loss of various things.

First rule of any general travelling is the aspect of travelling. If the travel is for professional purposes, the wisest thing would be contacting the host at the location and discuss in detail the plans and activities arranged there. Then a detailed plan of activities around this would be sufficient. If the trip planned is a pleasure or sight seeing trip, then the path is more hard and long. One has to first decide upon the tourist spot one wants to travel to. Various elements like the climate, the political condition of the place, the health of the traveler has all to be taken into consideration when planning for a trip. The various tourist spots can be searched either online or through the various travel brochures provided by the travel agents.

Then is the careful planning of tickets and visa if required. Searching for an apt and budget worthy hotel at the selected tourist spot is the next job. This can be handled both through the Internet and also through the various travel agents. Following this, a ground research on the major tourist attraction of the selected place is an absolute necessity. This avoids the regret felt later when the tourist misses out on a major hot spot of the place. Some of these attraction spots may require an advance booking for entry and this can again be done through a travel agency or the internet.

Once the tourist spot, the tickets, the accommodation are all fixed next is the packing of things to be taken along. According to the location, climate and culture, one has to carefully select the clothes and things. One shouldn’t end up dressed in an Eskimo outfit while travelling to a Hawaii beach. Also travelling light is the biggest secret to a successful travel trip. One has to bear in mind that anything and everything can be bought at the destination or on the way. But it is necessary to pack a first aid kit and the essential medicines, if the tourist has some kind of health problem or is allergic to something.

Before the onset of travel, on has also to think and decide about the pets at home. Mostly, tourists leave back their pets. Proper arrangement of these pets at friends or at a relative’s place is essential. This takes the things off one’s mind while relaxing at their favorite destination. Also if one has a garden, hiring a temporary gardener or asking a friend to tend the plants will be a wise idea. All this planning will lead to a happy and enjoying trip.

Keeping Your Valuables While Traveling

Traveling, be it just across state or to another country is always a great experience. To help people enjoy it rather than having an untoward incident such as losing ones passport or other items such as luggage, it is best to be prepared to avoid such things from happening.

An essential item for any passenger traveling is the passport. This, aside from cash and the tickets must be nearby at all times preferably in a small handbag or purse for easy accessibility. If it is possible, one should memorize the passport number just in case for some reason it gets lost.

There is a high probability that when one travels, one usually uses the same bag for various trips. It is best to remove all the old destination tags and just have the new destination tag attached to avoid confusion. Also, for personal protection, one must have a lock and key for the bag and have it labeled both inside and outside the bag to avoid having another traveler from getting the luggage by mistake.

Depending on the length of the trip, one should just bring enough bags that one can carry. If the trip will take a few days or longer, choose a more appropriate bag to bring along. Taking such precautions will make the person feel comfortable and not helpless or immobilized when one is also not certain where the taxi stand or the bus stop is located.

While traveling, one should be careful of the surroundings. One should never let a stranger look after the luggage because it is possible that they will put something in it or even steal it.

During the trip, one should choose a hotel located on a well-traveled street. Usually, the more expensive the hotel, the better the security. The first thing to do when entering a hotel room is to check the windows, sliding doors and connecting rooms if there are any and make sure it is secure.

Most hotels have a small vault in the room and safety deposit box, which is complimentary. When leaving the hotel, it is also advisable to leave the room key in the lobby and just claim it when entering the hotel room.

Do not answer the hotel room door before verifying who it is. If someone claims to be a hotel employee and one does not recall making any request from the help desk, it is best to call the front desk person first to verify.

Most importantly, make sure the hotel room door is locked at all times./pbr

Best Places to Travel

There is no single answer to the question of where are the best places to travel on vacation. The first question to ask is not what place to go but instead what kind of traveler are you?

What Kind of Traveler Are You?

* Are you a Phileas Fogg? Are you a world traveler who measures success by the number of countries visited?

* Are you a Robinson Curuso? Do you enjoy the out of the way and off the beaten path?

* Are you a Geoffery Chaucer? Is the trip more about the people you travel with than the destination?

* Are you a Henry David Thoreau? Is your ideal vacation just a quiet place near home?

There are many different traveling styles or different goals for travel.

* You can travel to get away from it all.

* You can travel to learn about a new culture.

* You can travel to party.

* You can travel to reconnect with family and friends.

* You can travel for adventure.

What is Your Travel Style / Budget?

Some people would rather stay home than stay any place that did not have 5 stars. Others could not imagine staying in any place more fancy than a youth hostel. Some who would love to stay at the fancy resort cant afford to.

Before you travel you need to figure out your travel budget and style. What kind of style you like will help determine where you can afford to travel and for how long. My wife and I planned a trip to Hawaii before our first child was born. After looking at our budget we had to decide that a road trip to San Diego would be a better option.

One if by Land, Two if By Sea… Three if By Air?

Do you like road trips? If so how about an domestic itinerary. If you like the outdoors or history you could visit national parks. If you like sports consider a tour of major or minor league ballparks. If you like big city lights would a trip to New York, Chicago or Las Vegas be within your range?

Do you like cruises? Consider only packing and unpacking once and letting your hotel (ship) travel from port to port. From the East coast of the United States Bermuda and the Caribbean are both easily accessible. From the west coast Mexico or Alaska offer very different vacations.

If you love to fly and can afford it then Europe, Africa, Asia and South America beckon.

Europe offers familiarity for American visitors but with loads of history. Europe offers destinations from the familiar London and Paris to less familiar destinations like Croatia, Slovenia and Estonia. You have to be willing to deal with another language or driving on the other side of the road.

Africa offers unforgettable wildlife experiences or the wonders of ancient Egypt. It also offers ancient churches dug into the rocks of Ethiopia or far off destinations like Timbuktu. It will require many travels to get further outside their comfort zone.

Asia offers ancient cultures and new economic powerhouses. Your trip might be to overwhelming places like New Delhi which will challenge even veteran travelers or safer more familiar destinations like Singapore.

South America offers better exchange rates than europe but less political stability. It offers European style cities like Buenos Aires or ancient Incan cities like Machu Picchu.

One thing I have learned from hosting the Amateur Traveler for over three years is that there are many more places to travel than I had originally considered. It had never occurred to me to:

* Go to Tonga and swim with whales.

* See the stone churches in Ethiopia.

* Do a night tour of Petra in Jordan.

* See the wild horses in Mongolia.

The more I learn about travel the more places I want to go. What is the best place to travel to? For me it is always the next place.

Cruise Travel Tips – Dont Leave Home Without Them

December 21st, 2009 No comments

Youve seen the commercials, vast blue oceans, beautiful white ship, and people laughing. What a wonderful vacation, sailing the deep blue sea and visiting exciting ports of call. This is certainly a dream vacation, especially as you sit in your office cubical in the dead of winter and shiver while you answer complaint calls from clients.

Cruise ships are a means of travel with some substantial benefits. The key advantage of a cruise ship is that it does the getting around for you. They make it easy to visit several places in a single trip without the need to pack your belongings and sit in a car/train/bus/plane to travel to each one; your hotel room comes along with you, and even provides the transportation. Additionally, most meals are usually included in the price of the cruise.

Timing is Everything

The most important cruise line tip is to ensure that you get to the dock on time. Although cruise ships sail from an increasing number of cities, most people still have to fly to get to and from their port of departure. If you are flying from another city into the location of your cruise line, make absolutely sure that your flight lands with enough time for you to disembark, travel to baggage claim, find your luggage and then locate a shuttle or taxi to the dock of departure. The cruise line will not wait for passengers. They are on a strict schedule of departure and arrival; the boat waits for no one. If you miss the boat, you miss your vacation.

Another important and valuable cruise line travel tip is to read all documents provided by the cruise line and your travel agent. Unless your ships itinerary is confined to a single country, you need to prepare for a cruise like you would any other international trip, including passports. Prior to booking flights or making any other travel plans, thoroughly read all documentation provided in regards to your cruise.

There are important contracts, guidelines, requirements and procedures that must be followed prior to boarding, and during the cruise. Again, the cruise line does not care if you didnt read your documents and forgot your passport or Visa. They only care that your travel documents are in order, youve taken the time to comply with their travel requirements and that you enjoy your stay once on board.

Safeguard your Luggage

Nothing could be worse than going on a cruise and losing your luggage, before or after the cruise. What a nightmare! It is essential to do everything possible to ensure that your luggage does not get lost. At the cruise terminal, baggage is given to the porters for loading to the ship Make sure that your suitcase is uniquely marked so that someone does not take your luggage by mistake. Identification tags are a must, so even if your luggage ends up in the wrong hands, it can easily find its way back to you.

Similar preparations are essential when leaving the cruise ship. On large ships you put a colored tag on your luggage and place it outside the cabin the night before you reach your final port, and pick it up ashore in the terminal. Some cruise lines are now offering an option where passengers can be first off the ship if they carry all their luggage off with them.

What about motion Sickness?

Some people experience queasiness on cruise ships. Many people find relief from special wristbands that stimulate pressure points that are believed to counteract the nausea of motion sickness. You can also get pills that will alleviate any discomforts caused by motion sickness. Make sure to get your supply in advance and dont forget to pack them in your hand baggage. You may never need them, but it is best to have them available just in case.

Dont Overlook the Details

It is especially important to review the cruise summary and travel itinerary to ensure that no errors exist. This cruise line travel tip is the one that will insure you get to spend your actual vacation time doing what you planned rather than sorting out a mistake and wasting valuable time. Most of the excursion arrangements are made through your travel or booking agent prior to your arrival at the boarding gate. As you prepare to board the ship, you will be given an outline of your activities to review as you wait in line. An essential cruise line travel tip is to take the time to scrutinize these items now, as they are the outline for your entire vacation. It is easier to correct any mistakes that might have been made now, while standing in line rather than once you are one board the boat. If you wait, you will lose precious hours of you vacation.

Cruise vacations are fabulous, but this type of vacation takes a considerable amount of preparation. If you heed the advice of these cruise line tips, you will not only get onboard, but you will also have the vacation of a lifetime!/pbr

Travel – Take A Deductible Trip You Feel Good About

They say we are in a recovery from the recession that nearly was a depression, but I haven’t personally seen many signs of it nor have most people. This means our frugal way of life is going to continue for a while. Fortunately, there is a way to travel abroad, claim a big deduction and do something good with your time. The most common method for finding a tax deduction when traveling is to claim it as a business expense. This is usually a humorous process where the taxpayer [that would be you and me] strain and twist to somehow justify that trip to a beach resort in Cancun was really for serious business purposes. The purpose is often one of those “conferences” that have tons of signs ups, but seem to be lightly attended when it actually comes to meeting! Well, stop bending to and fro for the tax man. I am not talking about such a vacation. Instead, the vacation we are looking at is known as a “funcation”. Yes, that is what they call them. In these vacations, you can go a number of places and do some activity. It might be hiking through Switzerland or biking through Spain. The only difference is you sign up a few friends or families to sponsor you. The more miles you do, the more they will pay to a charity of your choice.By turning the event into a charitable action, you create a tax deductible situation. There are a number of companies offering these vacations online. The total cost is usually between $2,000 and $3,000. This often does not include airfare, but make sure to check each package available. Regardless, you do get a tax deduction of around $1,000 per documentation issued by the companies. Not bad, eh?Traveling in 2010 might seem a stretch given the economic environment. It need not be. Just take a vacation that produces a tax deduction!br

Travel by vehicle poses distinctive problems that you can solve with a little advance groundwork and a few practical gadgets. This article describes several of these gadgets. A search that you can use to locate each item on the Net follows its description.

b1. Universal USB Car Charger/b

Electronic wonders like iPods and MP3 players make it easy to enjoy music and watch videos. However, many devices require recharging via computer USB ports. How can you accomplish this when you are stuck in a vehicle?

A universal USB car charger solves the dilemma. The most versatile of these chargers will plug into AC current as well as a vehicles power point or cigarette lighter. Use your devices USB cable to connect to the chargers pseudo-USB port, and it will recharge without a computer.

iKeywords for searching: USB car charger adapter/i

If you would like to construct your own adapter, you can splice together a 5-volt car charger and a USB female plug. Many websites publish complete instructions.

b2. Mobile Rechargeable Battery Charger/b

You may own a GPS, digital camera, or PIM that uses rechargeable batteries instead of alkalines. Rechargeables are a great environmental alternative – until they run down in the middle of a road trip. Fortunately, there are car chargers available. Carry one in your glove box.

b3. Solar-Powered Rechargeable Battery Charger/b

You can use a solar-powered system to recharge your batteries if the sun is shining. The best of these systems will also work with your vehicles cigarette lighter as well as household current. If you do your research well, you may even locate one with special adapters for your PDA or cell phone.

b4. Portable Water Heater/b

Many automotive and travel shops sell small water heaters that look like household kettles. These plug into your cars power point, enabling you to enjoy coffee, tea, hot chocolate, or soup – anytime – anywhere.

If you have an infant who requires a warm bottle at feeding time, try to find an immersible heater. These devices have a small heating coil that you can immerse in any liquid. Heat a bit of water in an appropriate container, and then leave the baby bottle in the water until it reaches the proper temperature.

b5. Portable Hand-Held UV Water Purifier/b

Tainted drinking water can quickly cause a case of the trots – also known as travelers diarrhea or Montezumas revenge. The answer? Purchase a portable pen-sized ultraviolet water purifier. UV light effectively kills bacteria, protozoa, and viruses. These sterilizers are so tiny that you can carry them practically anywhere – stowed in the glove compartment, in a purse or shirt pocket, or in the babys diaper bag.

b6. Multi-Tool/b

Many different types of multi-tools are available – with combinations of tools that might include nail clippers, screwdrivers, penknives, pliers, scissors, can openers, corkscrews, and other handy gizmos. Hunt around in the stores or online until you find one that contains everything you might need for your next road trip.

b7. Repair Kit for Eyeglasses/b

Dont pass over this tip just because you have perfect vision. Whenever you go outside, you should don a pair of sunglasses to protect your eyes. Traveling With a Cat

December 16th, 2009 No comments

Author: Andrea Freebr
Source: ezinearticles.combr
br
Do you want to bring Fluffy along with you on a trip? Are you moving and want to stop at a hotel along the way?Are you afraid to leave them alone while youre gone? You can bring your cat with you, but as we all know, cats can be difficult to accommodate, and because of that, special consideration should be given to how to travel with them.

The first thing to figure out before embarking on your trip is whether or not you can find a hotel that will accept your furry friend. Some hotels say they accept pets but dont allow cats.Others accept cats but require a deposit. Its a good idea to find out before booking your hotel what their policy is to make sure there arent any surprises when you arrive.(Do a search on our website for pet-friendly hotels and then give the hotel a call to find out what their requirements are about cats.)

Cats are not known for liking to go on car rides (see video below), so its important to know your cat and how they react to a car ride. While a dog might kick back and relax, many cats will feel stressed and might show it by howling, panting (yes, cats can pant), acting panicky, etc. They might associate being in the car with going to the vet, which is an unpleasant association for many animals (thermometer anyone?).

Here are some tips to make you and your cats trip more enjoyable:

Tip #1.They need to be kept in a kennel, and it might be a good idea to cover the kennel with a cloth or blanket. It can also help make your cat more comfortable to put a blanket or towel inside of the kennel for them to lie on.

Tip #2.Have your cat near enough (in a kennel, of course) so that you can reassure them. They want to know that youre there and that youre going to protect them.

Tip #3.Try to get your cat used to a kennel and used to riding in a car before a long trip.(Some cats will never get used to it, but this can still help make the trip less traumatic.)

Tip #4.Remember that cats are generally more sensitive to noises than dogs, so you should try to make the ride as quiet as possible and should probably avoid blasting your music.

Tip #5.Talk to your vet to see if they have any suggestions. They might want to give your cat something to make sure they stay calm.
