Road Trip Checklist – How To Make Endless Miles Turn Into Your Familys Dream Vacation

br
Does the thought of a family road trip strike fear into your heart? During the past 25 years, my family has taken many road trips traveling thousands of miles and we have great memories from those trips.

When we first started out, truthfully, we just threw our trips together and hit the road. But as time went on, we came to see the wisdom of planning our road trips a bit. If you are considering a family road trip, youll find some simple upfront planning will make all the difference in your travels.

Using a road trip checklist, you will save money, sanity, and time, as well as make sure your vacation is as fun as it can be. You can also make sure each member of your family pulls their own weight (depending upon age, of course), teaching them that great vacations are made, not born.

You can make your own road trip checklist (keep it on your computer for repeated usage) or feel free to use mine (see the resource box at the end of this article). On it, youll want to keep track of such things as…

- your travel budget (make sure your money gets spent on what you REALLY want),
- what food to take in the car (save big over buying snacks in gas stations),
- travel activities and games (you want to have fun, right?),
- vital extras that can actually make or break a family road trip,
- and destination details such as directions, phone numbers and ticket information.

When it comes to family road trips you will find success is in the details. For example,

- a mess in the car is no big deal when you have plenty of extra plastic bags and moist towelettes. But if you dont have any of these items, a sick kid or a spilled drink can ruin everyones vacation mood…for many, many miles.

- Worried about hearing are we there yet so many times your ears will pop? You can cut these words significantly with the right amount and type of travel activities. But do you know how to structure those activities for maximum effectiveness?

A road trip can save you quite a bit of money compared to the cost of flying your family to your vacation destination. In addition, you wont need a rental car once you get there.

However, you will be, in effect, living in your car with several people for several days. The more detailed your road trip checklist, the more satisfied you will be with your overall road trip experience. For example, by scheduling your meals and activities, you can make the trip itself as much a part of your vacation as your destination.

A road trip is an especially great way to spend long chunks of quality, unhurried time together as a family. This is where you will make the sweetest memories, Mom or Dad. It will be just your family in that car, to talk, to sing, and to laugh together for hours on end.

Just remember to take along your patience and your flexibility. Those are two qualities no successful road trip can be without./pbr

Tips on Airline Travel to Brazil with a Dog

December 15th, 2009 No comments

br
Dogs are wonderful companions to humans so it should not be a cause of wonder when humans bring their dogs even when they travel to other countries using any mode of transportation. Most likely, these pet owners have already established a relationship with their dogs and so they are not comfortable traveling to other places and leaving their dogs behind.
So why not go on a vacation with your dog? Whether it is a business or pleasure trip, no one can stop pet owners from bringing their dogs, even if they are traveling by air, land or sea.
People who are planning to spend their vacation in Brazil but could not afford to leave their pet dogs with a sitter should not worry because traveling with pets is already common nowadays. Thus, almost all modes of transportation have provisions and rules for pet travel.
Brazil is an ideal area for those who love the fine sand of white beach, enjoy the wilds of the Amazon and the picturesque attraction of the Igua็u Falls. A tame vacation can take you to Brazils dynamic culture and music. But do not get carried away yet because there is still one problem you have to solve; how to travel your pet dog by plane.
The cities of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo are the most common arrival areas for international flights to Brazil so query should be focused on the immigration and custom rules in these areas.
Brazilian law provides for strict regulation on the entry of animals to Brazil. The same law requires that your pet dog has an International Health Certificate. However, pet dogs with Health Certificates are only allowed entry in Brazil if they enter the country not later than thirty days from the issuance of the Health Certificate. Brazilian consulate officials must also legalize the Health Certificate seven days after its issuance.
Not only that because it is also required that the Health Certificate of your pet dog must be stamped or marked by the Department of Agriculture of the United States. Such Certificate must certify or confirm the good health of the dog, the vaccines it has been given as well as the fact that there were no diseases in the area at least forty days before the date of the flight.
The pet dog owner should also pay a $20 consular fee for every document processed and the payment should either be in cash or money order only since personal checks will not be accepted. The Brazilian consulate will mail you the documents but you have to send a stamped envelope with your address.
While the Brazilian authorities are understandably strict on the entry of pet dogs to their country, the pet owner should also make sure that the dog will not be able to get any disease in Brazil by asking the dogs veterinarian about the possible diseases in Brazil. Also make sure to treat the dog for fleas as you would not want him to scratch all over while traveling. This is also part of being a responsible dog owner because a dog that has fleas can infest other animals as well as hotels and even cars in your area of destination.
If the Brazil trip is geared towards the outdoors then it is best to make sure that the pet dog is in good shape especially if he has to do a lot of hiking during your vacation. However, avoid strenuous walking for small dog breeds of less than one year and for large breed dogs that are less than a year and a half. Inform the veterinarian about the itinerary of the vacation and ask him for advice as to whether the dog is fit for such a trip.

Lower Your Travel Costs

Many of us choose to travel on a regular basis, and whether we are going away on a business trip or a family vacation, the costs can soon add up. In an ideal world, we wouldnt need to watch the finances when we are going on the annual vacation but we do usually have to stick to a budget somewhere in proceedings. By saving money on the travel and the accommodation without compromising comfort and quality, though, it is possible to ensure you have more money for the vacation itself.

Booking time is a difficult factor to judge. If youre planning a family vacation for you, your partner and three kids then it is unlikely you will want to risk a last minute deal. There is no guarantee you can find the vacation you want and readying so many people in such a short space of time would prove difficult even for the army. Booking well in advance can save you a good amount of money. When you return from one holiday, start thinking about your next. Even if the accommodation is no cheaper, booking flights and other travel expenses will invariably cost you less.

Only book what you need. If you intend to be sight seeing and traveling surrounding areas a lot then you dont necessarily need a five star hotel will all your meals included. Self-catering apartments can be much more affordable than luxurious hotels and allow you the level of freedom you require from your vacation.

Remember that a vacation is still a vacation even without luxury. Camping trips can be true family adventure and if youre really short of vacation budget then they are the best option. Caravans offer slightly more in the way of luxury and usually cost slightly less in the way of cash. Camping parks also tend to have entertainment, pools and parks for you and your kids to enjoy for free or very little money./pbr

Travel Agent Tips for Planning a Family Vacation

December 10th, 2009 No comments

Author: SuzanneBradleybr
Source: articlerich.combr
br
Working with a travel agency can be difficult if you are planning a family vacation. Typically, couples without children are much more flexible, so if you have kids, make sure your travel agency can accommodate your special travel needs. Here are some tips for planning a family vacation with a travel agency:

Tip #1: Let your agent know the ages your children will be during the vacation.

When you book a trip, you typically are working at least a few months in advance. While this may not seem like a big deal for you, in that time, your childs age may change. Your travel agent needs to know this information. Sometimes, prices only apply to children in a certain age group, so if your child goes from being 12 to 13, a new fee structure may apply. In addition, if your child turns 18 before the trip, doors for new activities may open. The same is true for other ages. For example, a swim with the dolphins activity may specify that a child under the age of 14 needs to be accompanied by a guardian. If your child has a birthday before the vacation, you may be able to do that activity because he or she now meets the requirements. Be mindful of the documents your child needs to travel too, as they may change at different ages.

Tip #2: Talk about specific scheduling concerns.

Some children are very set in their schedules. If this is the case, you need to let your travel agency know the best time for flights and other travel. You want this to be a good experience for everyone. While you may have to make some adjustments, if it is just as easy for you to book an afternoon flight as it is to book an evening flight, you may want to specify your preference based on when your child normally eats and sleeps.

Tip #3: Be age appropriate.

Sometimes, travel agents try to talk you into purchasing tickets with neat entertainment options. Thats great…but can your kids go? Make sure that anything you plan before you leave is age appropriate. You cant very well call a babysitter when you are on vacation! Also consider the hotel in which you stay. With a few children under the age of ten, a five-star hotel might not make as much sense as a family-friendly resort.

Tip #4: Book your flight early.

The sooner you book you flight, the more options you will have. This doesnt just have to do with scheduling. If you get your tickets early enough, you may also be able to request seating together or near the airplanes bathroom. Booking early also helps prevent problems should the flight be overbooked. When that happens, the last people to book their flights get bumped to a different flight, and you dont want your group to be split up if youre traveling with kids.

Tip #5: Look for Disney alternatives.

Disney World is the quintessential family vacation. This is not your only option, though. Disney vacations can be expensive when you consider all the money youll spend on merchandise and extras for the kids. That place is built to get parents to spend money. Other alternatives can still be fun for your kids without being quite as expensive. Make it clear from the start that you want something as fun as Disney, but without going to that theme park. If Disney is the only child-friendly package they have available, you might want to work with a different travel agency.

Tip #6: Sign a flexible agreement.

If youre traveling with young children, it is usually a good idea to sign as flexible of an agreement as possible. Kids get sick, break bones, and otherwise cause travel problems fairly regularly, and if you have to cancel your vacation, you dont want to end up paying for it in full. Most travel agencies will require a deposit, but look for one that will transfer that money to a different travel date if you have to change your plans. That way, if junior comes down with the flu you can switch your vacation to another month without losing any money.

Tip #7: Work with a child-friendly agency.

Bbefore you start working with a travel agency, ask them about their experience working with families. A company that offers a number of amusement park packages is probably a better company for you than one who primarily books spring break trips. Most agencies have experience with families to some extent, but the best travel agency for you will have booked many family trips in the past. Their extra experience will give you tons of perks when you travel as a family.br

Travel Clothing – What To Take On Your Trip

December 8th, 2009 No comments

br
Traveling out of town is definitely a must whenever you can do it. Ah, but what clothing should you take on your trip?

Once you decide to go on a trip, what is the first thing you tend to do? For many people, it is heading to the local mall to buy new clothes. In most cases, you this is mistake and a waste of money. If you are going on a trip, you can usually find all the clothing you need already in your closet and drawers. For those of you like me who are messy, you can find it on the floor. Behind the couch. No, to the left. Yep, there. In all seriousness, there are a couple of items that just need to be addressed.

Not to be too severe, but you can easily identify a fool. It is the person who is on a trip and wearing brand new shoes. This is the cardinal mistake of many travelers. Buying new shoes for your trip is akin to putting your feet through the Spanish Inquisition. We are talking torture here. New shoes are not broken in and do not conform to your feet. This means you can expect to get blisters the first few days of your trip.

If you are going on a longer trip, these blisters can often turn into bloody things that would make the star monster in a horror flick cringe. More important, they are painful and can really limit your ability to get around. If you are going on a trip, stick to the shoes you current use for walking around. If you must buy something new, do it a month before and break in the shoes. It is easier to deal with blisters when you are home!

Being an upstanding human being, you probably wear some refined pieces of clothing. Refined clothing does not do well on trips. Personally, I believe just thinking about putting it in the luggage will ruin it, but who am I too say. Regardless, you should avoid any clothing that requires dry cleaning. Do you really want to spend part of your trip waiting for the dry cleaning, assuming you can even find a dry cleaner? A better approach is to purchase the wrinkly free pants and shirts available. I know I said you shouldnt buy anything new, but this is the one exception.

We all have our tastes when it comes to clothing. One of the factors we consider is the color. Some people look good in blue and others do not. Whatever your color, you should try to pack a selection of clothes in it. If most of your clothes are blue, for example, you will generally be color coordinated regardless of the combinations you wear. This is particular good advice on longer trips where certain pieces of clothing just will not survive the wear and tear. If you look like you are wearing a loud golf outfit at the end of the trip, you got it wrong.

If you are going to be traveling for any extended amount of time, you should incorporate the above into the basic following rules. Take only clothing that is light in weight. Take only clothing that can be rolled up. Take only clothing that can be easily washed. Never take anything you will wear only once or to a special occasion unless you are absolutely sure the occasion will occur. Now get out there and have a blast!/pbr

br
With this type of travel insurance, an individual can get insurance for one trip or many trips during the year. It also allows you to have a cover for other activities that you may carry out during the trip. For those below the age of 21, there is a special policy that can be taken out for them. Discounts are offered if you make your booking over the Internet.

Some of the policies that are offered under the American Express Travel Insurance include the following:
Single trip policy
This policy is for those who travel outside the country for a short time. There are a maximum number of days that this policy will cover and it will rarely be more than six months. You can only take out this policy if you are below the age of seventy.

Annual multi-trip travel insurance
If you travel within or outside the country more than three times in a year, this is the best holiday insurance policy because you only need to take it out once. Business travelers in particular will find this policy helpful since most of their trips are short notice.

Golfing cover
Your travel may include some golf and it would be important to have a cover that can help you if you get injured or if the clubs that you hired are stolen or damaged.

Winter Sports
Some of the sports that are covered by the winter sports policy are snowboarding and skating so if you are going to take part in other winter activities you have to clarify this to the insurance company. This is because you might need to pay more for them. The gear that you will use during the games will also be covered under this policy. The policy targets those who are below the age of forty.

Business cover policy
When traveling you should not just insure yourself but also the gear and money you have with you. The best thing about this policy is that in case you fall ill during your trip abroad; someone else can replace you and still be covered by the same policy.

Backpacker and long-stay travel insurance
This type of insurance travel policy, you are covered when you are traveling to different countries from a period of about three to eighteen months. Some of the activities that can be covered include bungee jumping and skydiving. Some of the countries that you may be visiting may be dangerous so this risk is included in this travel policy.

Benefits of the American Express Travel Insurance
-It gives you 24hr assistance during an emergency.
-You get an excess waiver.
-Personal baggage exclusion.
- Medical expenses of more than 14 million pounds
-A five percent discount when you apply online.

Cheaper Travel: 8 Tips for Getting There on a Budget

November 27th, 2009 No comments

Author: Shawn Wilsonbr
Source: articlerich.combr
br
With the economy in decline and no end in sight, many people are seeing their bank accounts shrink and their travel options dry up. But tightening the belt isnt necessarily the same as not having any fun. Travel is one of the most enjoyable things of life; just because the economy is bad doesnt mean you should have to change your internet dating profile byline from travel nut to too broke to leave home.

By simply planning on a smaller (less luxurious) scale and following some of the tips below, you should still be able to travel this year… and fit it easily into your budget.

1. Plan far in advance. If you try to plan a vacation only a month or two ahead of time, youre going to pay much higher fees for travel, hotels, rentals cars, etc. When you wait too long to reserve a spot at your favorite destination, youll pay heavily for it. Start planning at least six months ahead, before all of the best deals are snapped up.

2. Wait until the last minute. Okay, this seems to be the exact opposite of the advice given above, but… its just as valid. If you dont have the time or ability to plan ahead, think about going on a last-minute trip instead. Have your bags packed and ready to go, and watch for last-minute (cheap!) deals on travel sites and with travel agencies. The only hiccup? You have to be ready to leave immediately, and be very open about where you want to go. There wont be much choice!

3. Search for holiday apartments. A new trend in travel is the vacation or holiday apartment. These apartments are generally rented by the night or the week by their owners, and are a terrific way to save money. With vacation apartments, you get more space and amenities for less money. Plus, as most come with a full kitchen and dining area, youll be able to save a ton of money on meals, as well. Eating out is expensive; with a holiday apartment you can really trim you budget by eating most meals in your own kitchen.

4. Go in the off season. While some locations are pretty unpleasant during the off-season (think 24-hour a day rainstorms), most places are almost as nice in the off-season as they are during the peak. The weather may be cooler, but the cities and sights empty of tourists; making them, if anything, more pleasant. As a bonus, you can get great deals shopping for off-season vacations, getting as much as 75% off the peak season rates.

5. Tune your car and your driving. If you plan to get to your destination with a car, be sure to have it tuned and looked over first. Having your car break down in the middle of nowhere is expensive and stressful. Be sure to fill up the tires to improve your gas mileage, and drive to conserve gas rather than to get there faster.

6. Allow for unusual hours. When flying to your holiday destination, you might find that some flights are cheaper when arrival or departure times are a little unusual or inconvenient. Go for them! Sure, its a pain when you have to leave your home at 3:00 in the morning for a 5:30 a.m. flight, but your bank account will thank you. And after all, you can always sleep on the plane.

7. Skimp on the hotel. For most vacations, the point of traveling at all is, well, seeing the place itself. You dont go to Paris or San Francisco or Niagara Falls to sit in your hotel room all day. You go there to experience the city and the culture around you. Which means that the hotel is one of the first places you can look to save money. Its also the place where you will probably save the most. Plan ahead, and look at some hotels that you might otherwise pass by.

8. Dont worry about your wheels. Too many travelers are picky about what kind of car they rent on vacation. Dont be. You dont need a fast or flashy car for a trip through the wine country; you simply need something with wheels and a roof. Choosing an economy car instead of a full size can save you hundreds… and do you really need a sun roof and iPod dock for the radio?br
