Travel Essentials

There are numerous travel essentials you should consider packing
when vacationing in America or elsewhere. These often-forgotten
travel accessories will help make the trip a smoother and more
enjoyable experience for everyone.

Sunblock

Sunblock is an absolute must – and can easily be forgotten in
the haste of packing. Even if you don’t plan on visiting the
beach or swimming, you may easily find yourself in the hot sun
all day, and come home to find relaxing an impossibility. Don’t
let sunburn ruin your American vacation
- pack lots of Sunblock.

Credit/Debit Cards

These are vital for travelling, especially when travelling
overseas. A Visa credit or checking card can save you much
hassle if your money is stolen, or unexpected fines or
circumstances leave you low on funds. It’s important to bring
some cash money on any vacation, but a few hundred
dollars and a credit card can keep you worry-free.

Bathroom Accessories

Pre-Moistened towlettes can make filthy car messes and sticky
situations much more comfortable, and are vitally important for
family vacations when young children are involved. Be sure to
pack several bars of soap, one for each traveller, as well as a
set of towls , toilet paper, and if possible, a first aid
kit.

When vacationing, you can’t be sure that these items will be at
your disposal. With the help of this American vacationing
guide, hopefully you’ll be better prepared.

Best Places to Travel

There is no single answer to the question of where are the best places to travel on vacation. The first question to ask is not what place to go but instead what kind of traveler are you?

What Kind of Traveler Are You?

* Are you a Phileas Fogg? Are you a world traveler who measures success by the number of countries visited?

* Are you a Robinson Curuso? Do you enjoy the out of the way and off the beaten path?

* Are you a Geoffery Chaucer? Is the trip more about the people you travel with than the destination?

* Are you a Henry David Thoreau? Is your ideal vacation just a quiet place near home?

There are many different traveling styles or different goals for travel.

* You can travel to get away from it all.

* You can travel to learn about a new culture.

* You can travel to party.

* You can travel to reconnect with family and friends.

* You can travel for adventure.

What is Your Travel Style / Budget?

Some people would rather stay home than stay any place that did not have 5 stars. Others could not imagine staying in any place more fancy than a youth hostel. Some who would love to stay at the fancy resort cant afford to.

Before you travel you need to figure out your travel budget and style. What kind of style you like will help determine where you can afford to travel and for how long. My wife and I planned a trip to Hawaii before our first child was born. After looking at our budget we had to decide that a road trip to San Diego would be a better option.

One if by Land, Two if By Sea… Three if By Air?

Do you like road trips? If so how about an domestic itinerary. If you like the outdoors or history you could visit national parks. If you like sports consider a tour of major or minor league ballparks. If you like big city lights would a trip to New York, Chicago or Las Vegas be within your range?

Do you like cruises? Consider only packing and unpacking once and letting your hotel (ship) travel from port to port. From the East coast of the United States Bermuda and the Caribbean are both easily accessible. From the west coast Mexico or Alaska offer very different vacations.

If you love to fly and can afford it then Europe, Africa, Asia and South America beckon.

Europe offers familiarity for American visitors but with loads of history. Europe offers destinations from the familiar London and Paris to less familiar destinations like Croatia, Slovenia and Estonia. You have to be willing to deal with another language or driving on the other side of the road.

Africa offers unforgettable wildlife experiences or the wonders of ancient Egypt. It also offers ancient churches dug into the rocks of Ethiopia or far off destinations like Timbuktu. It will require many travels to get further outside their comfort zone.

Asia offers ancient cultures and new economic powerhouses. Your trip might be to overwhelming places like New Delhi which will challenge even veteran travelers or safer more familiar destinations like Singapore.

South America offers better exchange rates than europe but less political stability. It offers European style cities like Buenos Aires or ancient Incan cities like Machu Picchu.

One thing I have learned from hosting the Amateur Traveler for over three years is that there are many more places to travel than I had originally considered. It had never occurred to me to:

* Go to Tonga and swim with whales.

* See the stone churches in Ethiopia.

* Do a night tour of Petra in Jordan.

* See the wild horses in Mongolia.

The more I learn about travel the more places I want to go. What is the best place to travel to? For me it is always the next place.

Travel – Take A Deductible Trip You Feel Good About

They say we are in a recovery from the recession that nearly was a depression, but I haven’t personally seen many signs of it nor have most people. This means our frugal way of life is going to continue for a while. Fortunately, there is a way to travel abroad, claim a big deduction and do something good with your time. The most common method for finding a tax deduction when traveling is to claim it as a business expense. This is usually a humorous process where the taxpayer [that would be you and me] strain and twist to somehow justify that trip to a beach resort in Cancun was really for serious business purposes. The purpose is often one of those “conferences” that have tons of signs ups, but seem to be lightly attended when it actually comes to meeting! Well, stop bending to and fro for the tax man. I am not talking about such a vacation. Instead, the vacation we are looking at is known as a “funcation”. Yes, that is what they call them. In these vacations, you can go a number of places and do some activity. It might be hiking through Switzerland or biking through Spain. The only difference is you sign up a few friends or families to sponsor you. The more miles you do, the more they will pay to a charity of your choice.By turning the event into a charitable action, you create a tax deductible situation. There are a number of companies offering these vacations online. The total cost is usually between $2,000 and $3,000. This often does not include airfare, but make sure to check each package available. Regardless, you do get a tax deduction of around $1,000 per documentation issued by the companies. Not bad, eh?Traveling in 2010 might seem a stretch given the economic environment. It need not be. Just take a vacation that produces a tax deduction!br

Road Trip Checklist – How To Make Endless Miles Turn Into Your Familys Dream Vacation

December 15th, 2009 No comments

br
Does the thought of a family road trip strike fear into your heart? During the past 25 years, my family has taken many road trips traveling thousands of miles and we have great memories from those trips.

When we first started out, truthfully, we just threw our trips together and hit the road. But as time went on, we came to see the wisdom of planning our road trips a bit. If you are considering a family road trip, youll find some simple upfront planning will make all the difference in your travels.

Using a road trip checklist, you will save money, sanity, and time, as well as make sure your vacation is as fun as it can be. You can also make sure each member of your family pulls their own weight (depending upon age, of course), teaching them that great vacations are made, not born.

You can make your own road trip checklist (keep it on your computer for repeated usage) or feel free to use mine (see the resource box at the end of this article). On it, youll want to keep track of such things as…

- your travel budget (make sure your money gets spent on what you REALLY want),
- what food to take in the car (save big over buying snacks in gas stations),
- travel activities and games (you want to have fun, right?),
- vital extras that can actually make or break a family road trip,
- and destination details such as directions, phone numbers and ticket information.

When it comes to family road trips you will find success is in the details. For example,

- a mess in the car is no big deal when you have plenty of extra plastic bags and moist towelettes. But if you dont have any of these items, a sick kid or a spilled drink can ruin everyones vacation mood…for many, many miles.

- Worried about hearing are we there yet so many times your ears will pop? You can cut these words significantly with the right amount and type of travel activities. But do you know how to structure those activities for maximum effectiveness?

A road trip can save you quite a bit of money compared to the cost of flying your family to your vacation destination. In addition, you wont need a rental car once you get there.

However, you will be, in effect, living in your car with several people for several days. The more detailed your road trip checklist, the more satisfied you will be with your overall road trip experience. For example, by scheduling your meals and activities, you can make the trip itself as much a part of your vacation as your destination.

A road trip is an especially great way to spend long chunks of quality, unhurried time together as a family. This is where you will make the sweetest memories, Mom or Dad. It will be just your family in that car, to talk, to sing, and to laugh together for hours on end.

Just remember to take along your patience and your flexibility. Those are two qualities no successful road trip can be without./pbr

Lower Your Travel Costs

Many of us choose to travel on a regular basis, and whether we are going away on a business trip or a family vacation, the costs can soon add up. In an ideal world, we wouldnt need to watch the finances when we are going on the annual vacation but we do usually have to stick to a budget somewhere in proceedings. By saving money on the travel and the accommodation without compromising comfort and quality, though, it is possible to ensure you have more money for the vacation itself.

Booking time is a difficult factor to judge. If youre planning a family vacation for you, your partner and three kids then it is unlikely you will want to risk a last minute deal. There is no guarantee you can find the vacation you want and readying so many people in such a short space of time would prove difficult even for the army. Booking well in advance can save you a good amount of money. When you return from one holiday, start thinking about your next. Even if the accommodation is no cheaper, booking flights and other travel expenses will invariably cost you less.

Only book what you need. If you intend to be sight seeing and traveling surrounding areas a lot then you dont necessarily need a five star hotel will all your meals included. Self-catering apartments can be much more affordable than luxurious hotels and allow you the level of freedom you require from your vacation.

Remember that a vacation is still a vacation even without luxury. Camping trips can be true family adventure and if youre really short of vacation budget then they are the best option. Caravans offer slightly more in the way of luxury and usually cost slightly less in the way of cash. Camping parks also tend to have entertainment, pools and parks for you and your kids to enjoy for free or very little money./pbr

Travel Agent Tips for Planning a Family Vacation

December 10th, 2009 No comments

br
Working with a travel agency can be difficult if you are planning a family vacation. Typically, couples without children are much more flexible, so if you have kids, make sure your travel agency can accommodate your special travel needs. Here are some tips for planning a family vacation with a travel agency:

Tip #1: Let your agent know the ages your children will be during the vacation.

When you book a trip, you typically are working at least a few months in advance. While this may not seem like a big deal for you, in that time, your childs age may change. Your travel agent needs to know this information. Sometimes, prices only apply to children in a certain age group, so if your child goes from being 12 to 13, a new fee structure may apply. In addition, if your child turns 18 before the trip, doors for new activities may open. The same is true for other ages. For example, a swim with the dolphins activity may specify that a child under the age of 14 needs to be accompanied by a guardian. If your child has a birthday before the vacation, you may be able to do that activity because he or she now meets the requirements. Be mindful of the documents your child needs to travel too, as they may change at different ages.

Tip #2: Talk about specific scheduling concerns.

Some children are very set in their schedules. If this is the case, you need to let your travel agency know the best time for flights and other travel. You want this to be a good experience for everyone. While you may have to make some adjustments, if it is just as easy for you to book an afternoon flight as it is to book an evening flight, you may want to specify your preference based on when your child normally eats and sleeps.

Tip #3: Be age appropriate.

Sometimes, travel agents try to talk you into purchasing tickets with neat entertainment options. Thats great…but can your kids go? Make sure that anything you plan before you leave is age appropriate. You cant very well call a babysitter when you are on vacation! Also consider the hotel in which you stay. With a few children under the age of ten, a five-star hotel might not make as much sense as a family-friendly resort.

Tip #4: Book your flight early.

The sooner you book you flight, the more options you will have. This doesnt just have to do with scheduling. If you get your tickets early enough, you may also be able to request seating together or near the airplanes bathroom. Booking early also helps prevent problems should the flight be overbooked. When that happens, the last people to book their flights get bumped to a different flight, and you dont want your group to be split up if youre traveling with kids.

Tip #5: Look for Disney alternatives.

Disney World is the quintessential family vacation. This is not your only option, though. Disney vacations can be expensive when you consider all the money youll spend on merchandise and extras for the kids. That place is built to get parents to spend money. Other alternatives can still be fun for your kids without being quite as expensive. Make it clear from the start that you want something as fun as Disney, but without going to that theme park. If Disney is the only child-friendly package they have available, you might want to work with a different travel agency.

Tip #6: Sign a flexible agreement.

If youre traveling with young children, it is usually a good idea to sign as flexible of an agreement as possible. Kids get sick, break bones, and otherwise cause travel problems fairly regularly, and if you have to cancel your vacation, you dont want to end up paying for it in full. Most travel agencies will require a deposit, but look for one that will transfer that money to a different travel date if you have to change your plans. That way, if junior comes down with the flu you can switch your vacation to another month without losing any money.

Tip #7: Work with a child-friendly agency.

Bbefore you start working with a travel agency, ask them about their experience working with families. A company that offers a number of amusement park packages is probably a better company for you than one who primarily books spring break trips. Most agencies have experience with families to some extent, but the best travel agency for you will have booked many family trips in the past. Their extra experience will give you tons of perks when you travel as a family.br

What To Know Before You Go Travel Tips

December 6th, 2009 No comments

br
Vacations are what everyone dreams of as they pass through the drudgery of everyday life. Vacation is a term used in English speaking North America to describe a lengthy time away from work or school, a trip abroad, or simply a pleasure trip away from home, such as a trip to the beach that lasts several days or longer. The term derives from the fact that, in the past, upper-class families would literally move to a summer home for part of the year, leaving their usual family home vacant.

However, a quality vacation requires a considerable amount of preparation in order to ensure a leisurely time away. The most important tip before you go on vacation is to ensure that the mail, paper and package deliveries are rerouted prior to leaving your home. The fastest way to alert a burglar that your home is unattended is to allow the daily newspaper to pile up on the front step or in the newspaper box. Taking a few moments to contact the postal delivery person and newspaper delivery person could make all the difference.

Responsibility Before Play

Another important tip before you go is to visit your local financial institute and purchase travelers checks. There is no other way to insure that the money you have been saving for your vacation will be will remain yours and not a pickpockets. A very important tip before you go on vacation is to prepare appropriate and accurate travel documents. If you dont have a passport and think you might need one, now is the time to get it. If you have a passport, now is the time to renew it — even if its not set to expire anytime soon. Travel abroad and youll notice how often you have to show your passport: at hotels, banks, Internet cafes. So securing your passport before you go is an absolute must!

Many countries are specific in their requirements. Make sure that you have all necessary travel documents gathered into one place, generally keep them with the airline tickets, and ensure that everything is properly dated, signed and notarized. Without the proper documents, you can be denied entry to another country or be unable to return to your own.

It is always valuable to research the climate of the destination when organizing your travel wardrobe. Before you go tips are many but the need to pay close attention to the weather is an absolute must. The weather has been suggested as an environmental factor affecting physical activity. Particularly in temperate climates, the weather varies considerably by season and even day-to-day. Weather or time of year apparently impacts all socioeconomic groups as a barrier to physical activity.

A well-prepared wardrobe will make your vacation run smoothly. Always pack neutral colors and basic items to insure that you are covered for all situations. For women, a black cocktail dress is always a saving grace. Men should always pack a button down shirt and dinner jacket and slacks for those special nights. It is taking the time to pay attention to the details that will save you time on your vacation.

Before you go, Remember your goal is Fun

There are so many different ideas and suggestions when traveling, everyone has an idea of what works best. Before you go tips are as plenty as the options for travel locations. However, it is most important that you secure your home, your identity, and your finances prior to departure. Everything else has a way of working itself out in the end. Once you have ensured that the most important security items are organized and taken care of, remember that the final part of a vacation is to enjoy it./pbr

br
With this type of travel insurance, an individual can get insurance for one trip or many trips during the year. It also allows you to have a cover for other activities that you may carry out during the trip. For those below the age of 21, there is a special policy that can be taken out for them. Discounts are offered if you make your booking over the Internet.

Some of the policies that are offered under the American Express Travel Insurance include the following:
Single trip policy
This policy is for those who travel outside the country for a short time. There are a maximum number of days that this policy will cover and it will rarely be more than six months. You can only take out this policy if you are below the age of seventy.

Annual multi-trip travel insurance
If you travel within or outside the country more than three times in a year, this is the best holiday insurance policy because you only need to take it out once. Business travelers in particular will find this policy helpful since most of their trips are short notice.

Golfing cover
Your travel may include some golf and it would be important to have a cover that can help you if you get injured or if the clubs that you hired are stolen or damaged.

Winter Sports
Some of the sports that are covered by the winter sports policy are snowboarding and skating so if you are going to take part in other winter activities you have to clarify this to the insurance company. This is because you might need to pay more for them. The gear that you will use during the games will also be covered under this policy. The policy targets those who are below the age of forty.

Business cover policy
When traveling you should not just insure yourself but also the gear and money you have with you. The best thing about this policy is that in case you fall ill during your trip abroad; someone else can replace you and still be covered by the same policy.

Backpacker and long-stay travel insurance
This type of insurance travel policy, you are covered when you are traveling to different countries from a period of about three to eighteen months. Some of the activities that can be covered include bungee jumping and skydiving. Some of the countries that you may be visiting may be dangerous so this risk is included in this travel policy.
